Mio Sport Select Heart Rate Watch Review

Mio Sport Select Heart Rate WatchI actually have the Sport model, not the Sport Select; but I did not see that one listed.

These watches are supposed to be as accurate as an EKG machine, and the company has testimonials to affirm that is true.

The steel back of the watch must be in contact with your arm while two fingers are on the metal buttons next to the display to get a reading. The arm must be relaxed and the fingers should not press too hard.Lick the fingertips before pressing the buttons for a faster, more dependable reading.I bought mine to use while cycling, and it helps me do what I want to do.

A number of things can interfere with getting a reading.See the FAQ's on the MIO web site if you have problems. For example, although my watch is new, I have no idea how long it sat in a warehouse. As a precautionary measure, I plan to install a new battery. The watch has not given a heart rate reading a couple of times and a weak battery can be a cause. If riding a bike on rough road, the vibration transmitted to your arm will keep the watch from giving a reading. If your arm muscles are not very relaxed, you will not get a reading. If I can avoid these two conditions, I can usually get a reading, even while riding.

The chief selling point is no need for a chest strap.

I like the watch. It has helped me modify my exercise program and I am losing weight at a more steady pace since buying the watch.

Update: One day I suddenly could get no heart rate readings.Later in the day I did get readings, but they were in the 200 bpm range and totally false.Through a process of reasoning and experimenting I decided the thin plastic film on the inside of the metal back plate was too thin in some spot and no longer electrically isolated the battery holder from the metal back.I cut a disc of paper the same shape and size as the thin white plastic film.I inserted it between the battery and the metal back.I was careful to allow the coiled spring to make good electrical contact with the metal back. The heart rate monitor works just like it should again.

Also, I did replace the battery, since I learned my Sport is no longer in production and could be a couple of years old already.Heart rate readings come a little faster with the new battery.

About Mio
The story of Mio began in 1999 when it was created by entrepreneur and mother of three, Liz Dickinson. Like many of us, Liz balances family and career, leaving little time for fitness. After several unsuccessful attempts to achieve her fitness goals and shed the pregnancy weight-gain of her third child, Liz turned to a personal trainer for advice. While working with a trainer, Liz realized the key to getting in shape and staying in shape is to practice smart eating habits, monitoring calorie intake, and using a heart rate monitor to ensure that she exercises at the right level. Liz realized there wasn't a product available on the market that would easily help her follow her trainer's advice.
Liz didn't have time to read labels and carry a calorie journal in her purse, nor did she have much patience for the uncomfortable chest strap she had to wear to get her heart rate. She knew there had to be a better way, so Liz used her technology and marketing savvy to create Mio, the world's first heart rate monitor to work without a chest strap. And, it didn't stop with just heart rate, as Mio also has a patented calorie management system that offers a straightforward approach to managing your diet. With the help of Mio and a balanced diet, Liz was able to shed those unwanted pounds and gain the benefits that come with improved fitness: more energy, more vitality, and less stress, and help many others do the same with the creation of Mio's products.

New Balance HRT Max Heart Rate Monitor (Black) Review

New Balance HRT Max Heart Rate MonitorI bought this watch about 18 months ago, from Amazon, because I wanted a simple, durable HRM where I could change the batteries myself, have simple functions and have the choice of using the built in sensors or a chest strap to track my heart rate. It worked fine for the first year - I wore the watch 2 - 3 times a week for my 5k runs. Then it just stopped working. It still told the time but it wasn't giving heart rate readings anymore either through the sensors or the chest strap. I emailed the manufacturer (Highgear) and made a warranty claim. They offered me another model in exchange which didn't have the built in sensors, but I insisted on a like for like replacement. So they sent this model over, which looked exactly the same, and when the package arrived there was no accompanying chest strap. Called the manufacturer back and they say, "sorry, this new revised model doesn't come with a chest strap". This was never mentioned during the warranty claim process! I didn't bother making another claim as they put the onus on me to prove they did not communicate properly. The replacement watch works ok and it deserves two stars for that but it's not what I originally bought. Overall, this has been a very frustrating ownership experience and I will not buy from them again.

Mio Stride strapless heart rate monitor and pedometer Review

Mio Stride strapless heart rate monitor and pedometerThis monitor works great. It only takes a few seconds to get a heart rate, then the watch automatically returns to the time display. There are options for timers, dual time zone display, and several other features -- such as pedometer steps. It really is many things in one and it is very light. It has a backlight for the display and it is very easy to set -- no need to get out the manual to adjust the settings.I have been wearing it for a couple weeks now and it really is all that I hoped for.

MIO Shape Elite Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

MIO Shape Elite Heart Rate Monitor WatchThis makes a great casual watch in addition to a heart monitor.Don't expect too much though.Strapless HRMs are not able to provide continuous heart rate like those that require a chest strap... so decide if the comfort of not wearing a chest strap is worth having to put your fingers on the watch for about 5 seconds to achieve a heart rate. To me it is.This is MIO's latest model (at the time of this review) and I believe that it is improved over some of the older models with regard to accuracy and obtaining a HR.I would give this 3.5 stars. When someone comes out with a strapless continual displaying HRM, then I will give that one 5 stars.

Mio Motiva Petite Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Mio Motiva Petite Heart Rate Monitor WatchI owned Polar F11 with the coded chest strap. I bought this watch because I want to use it for my lap swim (I'm not about to dip my $150 watch to the pool). I test the watch heart rate monitor accuracy during my morning walk by wearing my polar on the other hand. (I know it's overkill, but I need to know if the heart rate monitor is accurate). I took 7 reading from the watch, and 5 of them were accurate. They showed my heart rate the same number as my polar watch. If it's off, it would be off by 2-4 beats on the lower side than my Polar. Part of it maybe because my Polar reads my heart rate continuously while my Motiva reads my heart rate at a given moment and it takes time to read it too. The other 2 off reading might be caused by the way I pressed the sensor (I might not pressed it correctly) since it's a little challenging trying to get your heart rate while you are moving and using your left hand (I'm right handed).

On my next walking exercise, I did another test. I took 3 readings and all 3 reading read the same heart rate as my Polar. So overall, I would say the motive watch is accurate enough.

As far as design and construction, I think the watch is stylish enough to wear for daily time keeper, and the watch looks really sturdy and well made. It's also small enough for women to wear.

The only complaint I have is the alert sound (whether is for the exercise timer, alarm or anything that needs alert). The alert sound is way too soft. I barely can hear it. Even, my rebook watch has a louder sound than it. I can even hear my rebook watch alert while swimming and listening to my waterproof MP3. Compare to my Polar, I can set up the alert sound to: loud, soft or silent. With my Motiva, I have to keep checking the watch all the time to see if I have reach my exercise time.

I also took this watch on my swimming laps. The watch works fine, but I haven't have any luck getting my heart rate during my swimming. Usually I got it after I shower and change.
